Rebuilding a Settled Front Walkway
The original walkway had experienced enough settlement that isolated repairs would not provide an appropriate long-term result. Uneven sections affected the appearance of the entry and disrupted the transitions between the walkway, landings, and granite steps.
Cornerstone removed the existing walkway rather than attempting to cover or patch the underlying problem. Starting fresh made it possible to rebuild the front approach as one coordinated system and establish clean transitions across the sloping property.

A Traditional Herringbone Brick Pattern
Pine Hall paver bricks were selected to give the walkway the warmth and established character of a traditional brick entry. Their varied red and charcoal tones introduce natural visual interest while complementing the granite and the home’s blue-gray exterior.
Cornerstone installed the field of the walkway in a 45-degree herringbone pattern. Keeping the angled layout consistent across a long walkway, multiple landings, and changes in direction required careful measurement and execution.
A stack-bond brick border frames the herringbone field, defines the walkway edges, and creates a clean transition into each granite step.
Resetting the Existing Granite Treads
The existing granite treads were retained and carefully reset as part of the new walkway design. Their substantial appearance and natural gray color provide a strong contrast with the warmer brick pavers.
Each set of granite steps had to align correctly with the adjoining brick landings and changes in grade. Integrating the existing stone into the new layout helped preserve the classic New England character of the entry while improving the overall alignment and appearance.

A Level, Cohesive Front Entry
The completed walkway provides a clear path from the lower property to the front door, with brick landings and granite steps managing the changes in elevation along the way.
The herringbone pattern adds detail without overwhelming the landscape, while the border and granite treads give the entire installation structure. The result is a significant improvement over the settled walkway that was there before: level, cohesive, and designed for long-term use.
