A Functional Backyard Focal Point
An outdoor fireplace should provide more than a place to build a fire. Its size, materials, and placement make it a permanent architectural feature of the surrounding outdoor living space.
For this Easton project, Cornerstone designed a substantial fireplace that would anchor the existing patio while remaining appropriate to the scale of the backyard. The tall chimney creates a strong focal point, while the natural materials help the structure feel connected to the landscape.
The firebrick-lined core was positioned above the raised masonry base and wood-storage area.
Building the Fireplace Structure
Construction began with the prepared masonry base and structural fireplace core. Traditional yellow firebrick was used inside the firebox to create a durable interior surface suited to repeated exposure to heat.
The raised hearth establishes a comfortable transition between the patio and firebox. Beneath it, an open storage area provides a convenient place to keep firewood without requiring a separate rack elsewhere on the patio.
Construction photographs show the firebox and chimney core in place before Cornerstone added the natural stone and granite finishes.
Natural Stone and Granite Detailing
The exterior was finished with natural stone in varied sizes, shapes, colors, and textures. Careful placement creates a balanced composition across the front, sides, and full height of the chimney.
Cut granite pieces frame the arched firebox opening, adding definition and contrast against the more irregular natural stone. Granite also forms the broad hearth surface and caps the fireplace shoulders, tying the individual design elements together.
These details give the fireplace a finished architectural presence from every viewing angle.

The completed outdoor fireplace combines appearance, function, and thoughtful masonry detailing in one permanent backyard feature.
Its natural stone exterior brings warmth and character to the patio, while the granite hearth, firebrick-lined opening, and integrated wood storage support everyday use. The result is an outdoor gathering place designed to be enjoyed for years.
